The anticipation is killing me! Tomorrow we leave for a weekend in Oklahoma! Two weeks today we will be IN BRAZIL. I’m trying to relax and stay in the present, but dammit, I just want to get to the fun stuff.
So I thought I’d distract myself with a heated barbecue discussion.
Remember when I wrote this post about having found the perfect barbecue in DC at The BBQ Joint in Union Station?
Well, last week we picked up some ‘que from the newly famous DCity Smokehouse, to see how it stacked up. Because the district needs to know my opinion on barbecue, obviously. I am from Oklahoma, you know.
We also had the bbq pinto beans, green chile cheddar grits and potato salad, for a well-rounded meal(?)
The verdict was mixed. My favorite items were the pork sandwich with creamy red chile coleslaw, and the grits. Tom preferred the brisket sandwich as well as the grits (the grits were delicious). We both agreed that the potato salad, beans and ribs/tips left a little to be desired.
I found the brisket to be too hard, as in over-charred. The beans were okay, but didn’t have that zing I loved so much from the BBQ Joint’s beans. The potato salad lacked flavor. And the ribs and tips were a little chewy.
We were given two kinds of sauce, but to me they tasted very similar, both were smokey and spicy and not really my style – though I’m sure many people find it to their liking.
This was surprising, considering the amount of hoopla I’ve been hearing about DCity Smokehouse lately.
It’s possible that we would have had a better experience had we eaten the food at the restaurant, but at its current location, that’s next to impossible due to the very limited seating space.
They plan to move to a larger location this year, so maybe when we get back from Brazil, we’ll give them another go.
I will say, that if you’re looking for variety, DCity Smokehouse offers far more in the way of options than does The BBQ Joint. They’ve got a sassy sampling of sandwiches (including a half smoke I wish we had ordered), a plethora of platters and a smorgasbord of sides. The BBQ joint is quite limited in comparison.
But for now, as far as taste goes, it’s pretty clear. The BBQ Joint is still the best barbecue in DC. You heard it here first.
GET THE BEANS, Y’ALL!
